For the majority of Patek Philippe’s history, the brand made only a few thousand watches each year. Collecting was a personal, private endeavor, and Patek Philippe wasn’t the well known popular brand it is today. More recently, Patek’s production has grown to between sixty and seventy thousand pieces per year, and while that is a lot more than two or three thousand, it still remains far from the estimated 1 million watches Rolex produces! In spite of the expansion, each and every piece Patek makes still receives the level of detailed attention you would expect from a much smaller manufacturer. Case in point: the Patek Philippe 5207P Minute Repeater Tourbillon. The 5207P represents not only the peak of the brand’s skills in finishing and decoration, but also the pinnacle of Patek’s mechanical prowess.

History

The Patek Philippe ref. 5207 may look fairly understated at first glance, but it actually has quite the collection of complications, each with a great deal of history. Patek was the first brand to produce a perpetual calendar wristwatch, debuting in 1925. Expanding on this, the brand created the first retrograde perpetual wristwatch in 1937, and the first serially produced perpetual calendar wristwatch a few years later, in 1941. Notably, in 1940, Patek created the Ref. 1526, a perpetual calendar that utilized apertures to display the calendar indications. Similarly, the ref. 5207 utilizes apertures to display the calendar indications, showcasing Patek’s adherence to its history. While the ref. 1526 only displayed the day and month, the modern ref. 5207 has evolved to also showcase the date. The 5207 is clear evidence of Patek Philippe’s long history of making perpetual calendar wristwatches and makes clear why the company should be viewed as an authority on the complication.

The second major complication the 5207 features is the minute repeater. In 1916, Patek launched its first repeater wristwatch, tackling one of the most difficult complications with ease. Just 8 years later, in 1924, Patek presented its first minute repeater wristwatch. Finally, in 1939, Patek paired its expertise in minute repeaters and perpetual calendars to produce the Ref. 541, the brand’s first watch that combined the two high complications.

While both the perpetual calendar and the minute repeater are independently complex mechanical achievements, and while Patek Philippe is an authority on both complications, the difficulty of execution is compounded when you consider that these complications are housed within the same case. Patek didn’t stop there though, adding a tourbillon to the 5207 as well. Even with all of these complications, Patek was still able to achieve a watch that is well-proportioned, elegant and wearable.

Given the sheer number of complications and the level of intricacy involved, it’s no surprise that the 5207 was incredibly difficult to manufacture. Patek had to find a balance between the complications, wearability, and durability, and as these priorities are often in conflict, the end result is a serious achievement.

The reference 5207 was released in 2008, following a five year development period. Very, very few of these pieces were made each year, and even fewer have actually come to market in the years since.

Design Details

As mentioned, when Patek designed the 5207, the brand had to balance multiple competing priorities. First, Patek wanted to maintain wearability and visual appeal despite the multitude of complications and second, they wanted to create as simple a calendar layout as possible.

Regarding design and wearability, Patek used a modern case layout similar to the ref. 5205 Annual Calendar. The case has been stepped dramatically between the bezel and midcase, which in effect slims down the case profile significantly. The 5207 is almost 14mm thick in order to house the many complications, so making the case appear thinner is no small feat. Additionally, the bezel itself has a concave profile, which further reduces the visual weight of the watch. It is impressive to see the efforts taken by Patek Philippe and other luxury-brands to create the illusion of a thin profile so that a watch doesn’t look oversized in spite of its complexity. It’s difficult to do correctly, but here, Patek has done an admirable job.

Notably, on the 5207, the two major complications (the tourbillon and minute repeater) are not actually visible from the dial side (though the text “Tourbillon” does appear at 6 o’clock). The tourbillon can be seen through the sapphire caseback, as can the minute repeater’s gongs. This means that, despite the 5207’s many complications, the only displayed complication (beyond the time) is the perpetual calendar. The result is an understated salmon dial that is clean and uncluttered. Along with its platinum case, the 5207 is a true display of quiet luxury.

As previously discussed, the dial layout of the 5207 is more akin to Patek’s annual calendars, such as the 5205, than the brand’s perpetual calendars. The day, date and month on the 5207, while a perpetual calendar, are displayed in the same aperture format as the 5205. I love Patek’s use of apertures because they are incredibly legible and take up minimal real estate on the dial. Compared to other Patek perpetual calendar’s, the 5207 has a far simpler dial.

On the 5207, Patek Philippe has taken finishing to another level with the dial immediately jumping out. Unlike the dials of many other Patek references, the 5207’s is crafted from solid 18kt gold. The honey-like hue is complemented by applied white gold indexes and dauphine hands. While the case is constructed from platinum, the minute repeater slide is made from white gold. Side by side, you will notice the slight difference in coloring, with slightly warmer tones on the slide and colder hues on the rest of the case. This seems unusual, but one has to believe that Patek had a good reason for doing so. Distinct to this model, the side of the case and lugs has been extensively engraved by hand with relief carving. Carving into platinum is not an easy task for watchmakers, but the result is a beautiful finish and added level of boutique craftsmanship that once again elevates this watch from the standard production Patek pieces.

Inner Workings

The Patek Philippe 5207P is powered by the manually-wound caliber R TO 27 PS QI. This movement is just as special as the rest of the piece, both technically and aesthetically. Beginning with some of the technical refinements, the 5207’s perpetual calendar is one of the few to feature instantaneously changing calendar indications. Further, the watch’s tourbillon is visible only through the caseback because Patek did not want UV rays to interfere with the sensitive tourbillon lubricants. The gong chiming system has been placed at the bottom of the movement, near to the sapphire caseback. Achieving a high quality sound with a sapphire case back is incredibly difficult, but the chime quality on the 5207 is exceptional. The 5207 is adjustable in five positions, and has a 38-48 hour power reserve depending on the operation of the minute repeater.  In spite of the fact that the watch is manually wound, Patek has added a safety that prevents the piece from being overwound.

Shifting from technical specs of the movement to its aesthetics, the 5207 is just as impressive. Firstly, what is perhaps most wonderful about the R TO 27 PS QI is that so much of the mechanical complication is visible from the case back. At the bottom of the movement you will find the tourbillon, and at the top, the minute repeater. While Patek clearly designed the movement to showcase all the complications, they didn’t stop there. The finishing on the components is incredible. The tourbillon is supported by a fully polished bridge which features eight internal angles with anglage. This is easily one of the most difficult components to finish on any Patek Philippe watch. Similarly the exposed gongs are fully black polished and beveled. The tourbillon third wheel is 14k gold, and takes about 10 hours to hand finish on its own. Equally noteworthy and incredibly rare, this movement features two different types of Geneva striping. On the majority of the movement, the Geneva stripes are applied in a circular pattern, but on the gong side, the striping is a conventional straight pattern.

Whether or not you appreciate and judge watches for their movement finishing the way I do, it’s hard not to be impressed by the 5207. Put simply, every Patek is well finished, but the 5207 represents an entirely different level of movement decoration that stands out from the rest. Off the top of my head, I cannot come up with another Patek movement that would top this one. The amount of time Patek’s watchmakers spent on this caliber must be staggering and is at the very top of the Patek pecking order.

Versus the Competition

The first piece that comes to mind as an alternative to the Patek 5207 is the 5016P. We previously covered this piece in-depth, but fundamentally, the 5207 and 5016 share the same underlying complications: a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, and tourbillon. The 5016 displays the perpetual calendar with a retrograde display, but otherwise, the two watches are incredibly similar and much of the movement architecture overlaps. The 5207 is a bite simpler and more elegant, but depending on your preference, you might prefer the 5016.

Another similar compound complication from Patek Philippe to consider is the 5074 Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar. Unlike the 5016 and the 5207, the 5074 does not have a tourbillon. That said, this piece showcases a three subdial perpetual calendar display that is a more traditional layout reminiscent of many other Patek references. Additionally, unlike the 5016 and 5207, the 5074 is automatic. Perpetual calendars can be notoriously hard to set, and a watch with an automatic movement that can be placed on a winder, can ease the burden of owning a perpetual calendar.

If you like the aesthetic of the 5207 but want a different combination of complications, take a look at the 5208. Another automatic piece, the 5208 offers a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, and a monopusher chronograph. Another unbelievable watch, from Patek Philippe, the 5207 and 5208 share similar DNA both aesthetically and mechanically.

Personality

The 5207 represents a a contradiction of sorts. It is one of Patek Philippe’s most complicated timepieces, and with that, comes with a sky-high price. At the same time, though, the 5207 is far from a “hype watch”. The simple, yet elegant dial and the fact that most of the impressive complications are hidden from view, speak to a watch that is truly understated. A real “if you know, you know” kind of watch, you really need to appreciate high-end watchmaking to fully appreciate the 5207.

And as with most Pateks, there’s also an element of exclusivity when it comes to a watch like the 5207. As discussed, the model is extremely rare, and that has fueled healthy price appreciation on the secondary market. Whether it is the thrill of the chase, an appreciation of fine watchmaking, or collecting as an investment, this piece caters to a very dedicated collector who knows what they are looking for.

Final Thoughts

Sure, the Nautilus is cool. Yes, the Aquanaut is versatile. But that said, the bread and butter of the brand and the very reason why Patek is held in such high esteem, is because of their grand complications like the 5207. Unless you handle the 5207 in person, you might not appreciate the underlying engineering that makes the piece so special. The Patek Philippe Ref. 5207 is a watch for those that love horology and not hype.
