Each week, EWC will be gathering horological industry news, cultural conversations and moments surrounding our favorite topic: timepieces. Happy Friday; here’s what’s on our watch.

Not One, Not Two, But Three Perpetual Calendars

Audemars Piguet kicked off its 150th anniversary celebrations this week unveiling three perpetual calendars showcasing an all-new movement: the caliber 7138. Thanks to this new movement (and five patents), each of the new perpetual calendars offers the ability to make the corrections of every function via an all-in-one crown — a first for the brand. The result: a more user-friendly way to operate the complex perpetual calendar mechanism anytime, anywhere without the use of tools. Whether you’re a fan of the Code 11.59 or the iconic Royal Oak, there’s a perpetual calendar for you. Each of these anniversary editions fittingly comes in a limited run of just 150 pieces.

Leica is Making Watches Again?

The famed camera company is getting back into the timepiece game with the introduction of its first new timepiece in over two years. This week, the brand debuted the next evolution of the ZM 11 with the ZM 12. One of the most notable updates is more accessible sizing at 39mm compared to the ZM 11’s more oversized 41mm build. In addition, Leica has introduced a new dual-layer dial design that mimics the way cameras play with light and shadow. The brand adds another nod to its highly coveted cameras within the ZM 12’s easy-change strap system, with red dot fasteners in the same style and shape as the button used to release and swap the camera lens.

Award season will reach its crescendo this weekend with the Oscars. Last weekend, however, it was Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards where Vacheron, Hublot, and Jacob & Co. stole the limelight on the red carpet. Actors Kumail Nanjiani and Paul W. Downs attended the event wearing VC. Nanjiani sported a bold, oversized, and ultra-complicated model in platinum: the Traditionnelle Tourbillon Chronograph Collection Excellence Platine 42.5mm. Downs chose a more sleek, subtle, and classic look with the Overseas Self-winding 35mm in pink gold. British-Nigerian actor, Martins Imhangbe opted for a sportier watch for the occasion, hitting the red carpet in the lightweight Hublot Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Titanium 45mm. First-time SAG Award nominee Mark Eydelshteyn came hopeful to take home the win for Outstanding Performance by a Cast alongside his Anora co-stars. Although they ultimately lost to the cast of “Conclave,” his wrist game was strong thanks to Jacob & Co.’s Ashoka Cut Diamond & Tsavorite Boutique Watch.

Hublot also made a cameo in the latest season of “White Lotus,” which airs every Sunday on HBO Max. In case you missed it, be sure to keep an eye on the wrist of Patrick Schwarzenegger’s character, Saxon Ratliff. He’ll be rocking a Hublot Big Bang Unico Black Magic 44mm throughout the series.
