View all posts by EWC TeamIn an abundance of circular watches, sometimes we just want something a little bit different. And while square and rectangular watches might not be uncommon, they are a lot rarer than their circular counterparts. In this guide we wanted to take a look at 8 of our favorite gold rectangular and square watches, for the discerning collector who wants something just a little bit different.
Cartier Santos Medium Ref. WGSA0030
Price: $70,000-$75,000, Case Size: 40mm, Thickness: 12mm, Lug-to-Lug: 46.5mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Water Resistance: 100m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Automatic Winding, Material: Yellow Gold
When you think of square watches, you probably think of the TAG Heuer Monaco and the Cartier Santos. And while the Santos initially made its debut as a pilot watch, it has since become a iconic watch that can be both dressed up and down. As an example, the Santos Medium Ref. WGSA0030 looks just as home in yellow gold as it does in stainless steel. If you are looking for a versatile sport watch that you can wear for pretty much any occasion, this Santos will do the job.
Cartier Santos-Dumont Rose Gold Ref. WGSA0098
Price: $25,000-$27,000, Case Size: 31.4mm, Thickness: 7.3mm, Lug-to-Lug: 43.5mm, Lug Width: N/A, Water Resistance: 30m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Manual Winding, Material: Rose Gold
If the Santos is a little bit sportier, the Santos-Dumont is a little bit dressier. They are generally slimmer, have hand wound movements, and come on leather straps. But that doesn’t mean they are boring! The Santos-Dumont Ref. WGSA0098 is truly stunning. As if the dial’s peacock blue sunray dial isn’t mesmerizing enough, the bezel on this rose gold watch is set with matching peacock blue lacquer. It is truly unlike anything else on the market. But if you want to get this piece on your wrist, note that it was a limited edition of only 200 pieces.
Cartier Tank Louis Gold Brushed Dial Ref. WGTA0175
Price: $12,000-$13,000, Case Size: 25.5mm, Thickness: 6.6mm, Lug-to-Lug: 33.7mm, Lug Width: 19mm, Water Resistance: 30m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Manual Winding, Material: Yellow Gold
While the Santos is Cartier’s iconic square watch, the Tank is their iconic rectangular watch. And while many of the Tank models are fairly mundane in execution, the Tank Louis Ref. WGTA0175 is something else entirely. The watch features a mosaic dial that looks like almost looks pixelated. The There are rose gold, yellow gold and silver squares that come together to create a beautifully unique design. I would have to say that this is one of the most unique Cartier watches on the market.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Tribute to 1931
Price: $14,000-$15,000, Case Size: 27.5mm, Thickness: 7.2mm, Lug-to-Lug: 46mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Water Resistance: 30m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Manual Winding, Material: Rose Gold
If you love the Reverso and want something that is extremely faithful to the first model released in 1931, the Grande Reverso Tribute to 1931 is a great choice. This monoface version is so faithful to the original version, it doesn’t even say “Jaeger-LeCoultre” on the dial. Instead it just says “Reverso”. That aside, this Reverso retains the art deco styling that has made the Reverso so iconic, yet it is a little sportier than some of the newer models. It’s a great watch to dress up or down.
A. Lange & Sohne Cabaret 107.021
Price: $17,000-$19,000, Case Size: 25.5mm, Thickness: 9.1mm, Lug-to-Lug: 36.3mm, Lug Width: 20mm, Water Resistance: 30m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Manual Winding, Material: Yellow Gold
A. Lange & Sohne is known for its distinctive German design language, and for rarely venturing out from that aesthetic. And because of this, the brand’s watches are typically round. Well, the Cabaret Ref. 107.021 broke that mold while still maintaining common threads with Lange’s other, more traditional models. For example, you still get the big dat at 12 o’clock, and a large seconds subdial. If you want something a little out of the ordinary from the highly regard German watchmaker, take a look at the Cabaret 107.021.
Patek Philippe Gondolo 5124J-001
Price: $20,000-$22,000, Case Size: 33.4mm, Thickness: 7.5mm, Lug-to-Lug: 43mm, Lug Width: 22mm, Water Resistance: 30m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Manual Winding, Material: Yellow Gold
Many may not be aware, but Patek Philippe actually has a few non-traditional case shapes in their catalog, past and present. Most people know about the Ellipse, but many are not as familiar with the Gondolo. The Gondolo Ref. 5124J-001 has a rectangular case with a stepped down outer case that is more tonneau. This gives the watch a more art deco, 1930s design aesthetic that we really like. If you are looking for a Patek with more vintage leanings, the Gondolo 5124J-001 is a great option.
Richard Mille RM016 AI RG
Price: $67,000-$70,000, Case Size: 38mm, Thickness: 9.2mm, Lug-to-Lug: 49.8mm, Lug Width: N/A, Water Resistance: 30m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Automatic Winding, Material: Rose Gold
Richard Mille is most known for iconic tonneau-shaped watches. But they do have a few watches in their catalog that are not tonneau. One of these anomalies is the RM016 AI RG. Instead of being tonneau-shaped, the case is rectangular. But the watch retains much of the other design cues of RM, including a skeletonized dial and ultra-flat, 9.2mm case thickness. For those that want to go against the grain, but still want something from a haute horology brand like Richard Mille, the RM016 AI RG is an interesting option.
Lang & Heyne Georg
Price: $47,000-$50,000, Case Size: 32mm, Thickness: 11.5mm, Lug-to-Lug: 40mm, Lug Width: N/A, Water Resistance: 30m, Crystal: Sapphire, Movement: Manual Winding, Material: Rose Gold
Lang & Heyne is a relative newcomer to the watch industry, having been founded in 2001 in Dresden, Germany. But among the independent collectors community, the brand is very well regarded. Like A. Lange & Sohne, Lang & Heyne has a very German design aesthetic. And this can be seen the Georg, their rectangular offering. The design actually has a lot of similarities to the Lange Cabaret, including the subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. But unlike the Cabaret, it doesn’t have a big date (in fact, it doesn’t have a date at all). Overall, it is just a very nice looking gold rectangular option from a lesser known independent. But we definitely like it!
